The revolution began with the battle of Gonzalez in 1835 and ended with the battle of San Jacinto on April 21, 1836. It also began after a decade of political and cultural clashes between the Mexican government and the increasingly large population of American settlers in Texas. Colonists and Tejanos disagreed on whether the ultimate goal was independence or a return to Mexico.
