A student placed a disk of filter paper in each of the following solutions: disinfectant 1, disinfectant 2, disinfectant 3, and

distilled water. While the four disks were soaking in their respective solutions, she streaked a sterile nutrient agar dish with a culture of E. coli bacteria. Then, she placed each disk carefully onto the nutrient agar dish, placed the lid on the dish, taped it shut, and incubated the dish at 37°C for several days. The diagram shows how the nutrient agar dish looked on Day 1 and Day 4. The shaded portion of the plate on day 4 indicates the bacterial growth. What is the control in the experiment? A. Disk soaked in disinfectant 1 B. Disk soaked in disinfectant 3 C. Disk soaked in distilled water D. Disk soaked in disinfectant 2

This whole is experiment is called the Kirby Bauer disk diffusion method. It is testing the susceptibility of microorganisms to disinfectants to see which disinfectant works the best against killing the bacteria.
By asking which is the control it would mean the experiment is unaffected and kept the same.

That means the answer is C because water does not affect the bacteria

Explain the difference between independent variables, dependent variables, and control variables.
IgorC [24]

Answer:

Independent: Purposely altered

Dependent: Changes with respect to the independent being altered

Controlled: Never changes

Explanation:

An independent variable is a variable in which does not rely on other pieces/variables of an experiment to assume a value. In other words, it does not change when other variables change. However, it can be changed intentionally by the scientist.

A dependent variable is a variable in which its change in value relies on other pieces/variables of an experiment to assume a value. So, if the indeoendent variable is changed, the dependent variable will change as well. The opposite is not true though - if the dependent variable changes (for whatever reason), the independent variable hasn't necessarily been changed.

A controlled variable is a variable that stays CONSTANT throughout an experiment. It is never changed, and nothing will change it. An example of a control variable is the number of participants in a study: no more participants are being added, and no participants are being removed. The number of participants remains STATIC throughout the study.

Which of the following features of phospholipids allows for the phospholipid to interact with the aqueous environment in the ext
Vika [28.1K]

Answer:

The correct answer is 4. The presence of a polar or charged head group attached to the phosphate.

Explanation:

Lipids have a hydrophilic head and a hydrophobic tail. This allows them to form structures where the tails are hidden on the inside, and the heads interact with the water molecules. This conformation is the best energetically and allows the lipids to interact with aqueous environments.
