Billy the Kid had a great respect for Sister Blandina. He was coming to town to kill the 4 doctors who refused to help his friend after he had been shot. It was Sister Blandina who nursed Billy the Kids friend back to health and he was very grateful. Sister Blandina asked him to spare the lives of the 4 doctors, which he granted.
They believed it would get them to the East faster than traveling down the continent. This eventually led to them finding America.
