This is a good question to learn what to do with powers and how they multiply together.

What this really looks like
Latex (the computer language used on this site to show mathematical conventions) is very good at showing how powers look.

$(a^{1/2} * b^{1/2} ) ^{1/2}$

Whenever you see something like that, you apply the multiplication rule for powers. This is what it will look like.

$a^{1/2 * 1/2} * b^{1/2 * 1/2}$
with an end result of 
$a^{1/4} * b^{1/4}$

Notice how the powers multiply together. They don't add.
