India helped the Allies during WWI and gained their independence immediately following the war
ELEN [110]
During WWI, India made a huge contribution to Britain's war effort. Almost 1.5 million Indian men volunteered in the Indian Expeditionary Force which saw fighting in many allied war fronts, However India did not gain her Independence from Britain immediately after WW1, but rather after WWII, in 1947. The gain of independence was to a large extent through the passive resistance of Gandhi and his followers which began immediately after WW1, protesting against the oppressive British rule over India. On August 15 1947, the Indian Independence Bill took effect.
