The Stamp Act was passed by the British Parliament on 22nd March 1765.  With the enactment of this act, the British government put a direct tax on all paper documents such as newspaper, permits, wills and even on playing cards.

The American colonists ejected a unified protest against this act. They held that the act was unfair and the main reason for claiming this act as unfair was that the tax did not give representation to the American colonies meaning this act was imposed on American colonies without the consent of the colonial legislature. Accordingly, the American-colonists raised the slogan "No taxation without representation."
