When do we use a semicolon with independent clauses?

English

Answer:

<u>2. When the ideas in both clauses are closely related</u>

Explanation:

One of the uses of semicolons is to link two independent clauses whose ideas are closely related and are not linked with a conjunction like "and". By putting semicolons in this situation, we also convey that those are ideas are equally important.

The other options are incorrect because the semicolon is not used to link independent clauses with phrases nor dependent clauses because neither of these units expresses a complete thought or idea. (Options 1 and 3). Option 4 is also wrong because in order to separate simple items in a series, a comma, and not a semicolon, is used.

Hi there☺

I believe the answer is the second one, "<span>when the ideas in both clauses are closely related."

For example:

I really love cats; they are so cute and sweet.
Both are independent clauses, but are closely related ideas.

Hope this helped you.

Luda [366]

Answer:

Appositive: my youngest sister

Noun or pronoun renamed: Mary

Explanation:

An appositive is a noun or noun phrase set next to another noun or pronoun to explain or identify it. When it's essential to the meaning of the noun it refers to, the appositive isn't framed by commas. When it isn't essential, like in the given sentence, it is framed by commas.

The appositive in the given sentence is<em> my youngest sister</em>. The noun renamed by it is <em>Mary.</em>
