The best evaluation would be that these sentences are descriptive, and it uses more complex words rather than using words like the mailbox made a loud sound. Also using the extra word in "much like" helps the sentence flow because the sentence could have said "made a screech like someone scraping fingernails" so by adding much before like, it makes the sentence a lot smoother and a little bit more descriptive.
