The second reconstruction period featured active participation on the part of African-Americans to regain their rights that they had lost during the period of Redemption (U.S. history) and Jim Crow segregation in the latter part of the nineteenth century. During this period, African-Americans once again began holding various political offices, and reasserting and reclaiming their civil and political rights as American citizens.
