I believe the answer is: Because they show the truth of life

Reading books would force the people to confront the ugly side of humanities and the dark sides of life. For example, by reading history, people would be forced to realize that the good condition that society see today is build on the suffering, murder, and exploitation of another people.

That is because the company where they invested would give them money in return from its earnings, so the politician would want to protect the company that they invested in. If someone was their competition, a politician could use legal acts or be corrupt and eliminate competition that could harm their earnings.
