The distance of the Trojan war to Phthia, the home of Achilles, is three days, as stated by him in Book IX of the epic. When the Greeks under Agamemnon decided to keep attacking troy, Achilles had already kept himself and his men away from the war. In an effort to mend their differences, Menelaus sent gifts and even his noblemen including Odysseus to try to persuade him to join them in their attack of Troy. But Achilles told the messengers that he had already decided to leave for his home of Phthia. He said that "<em>If great Neptune vouchsafes me a fair passage, in three days I shall be in Phthia."</em> This is the estimation of Achilles for the duration of his journey back home.
