Explanation:
The major problems between Christians and Muslims living in Nigeria can be summarized under two main headings;
1) Ethnicity
2) Religious intolerance
1) Ethnicity: Nigeria is an ethnically diverse country having over 250 different languages. However, there are three main ethnic groups in Nigeria; Hausa (mostly in Northern Nigeria), Youruba (Mostly in South west Nigeria) and Igbo (Mostly In South East Nigeria). Majority of the people in the northern part of Nigeria are Muslims although a significant christian population exists in the north also. In the South West, a significant population of Musilims exists among a christian majority. In the South East, there are mostly Christians.
Therefore the country is sharply divided along the North-south lines where there is a christian majority in the south and a Muslim, majority in the north. All religious crises in Nigeria always bear an ethnic rather than a religious coloration.
2) Religious intolerance: Similar to the issues of ethnicity is the menace of religious intolerance among the Muslims and Christians. Religious intolerance is always fueled by feelings of superiority of one religion over another as well as unbridled fanaticism stemming from wrong indoctrination of vulnerable adherents of the both religions.
