The Treaty of Tordesillas was signed at Tordesillas on June 7th 1494. It divided the newly discovered lans between the Portuguese Empire and the Crown of Castille, by means of a line of demarcation, about halfway between the Cape Verde islands and the islands entered by Christopher Columbus on his first voyage. The aim of the treaty was to solve the dispute after the return of Columbus, who had claimed lands for the Crown of Castille.
