When the war finally ended about 4 months ago, the U.S. and Spanish governments signed the Treaty of Paris on December 10, 1898. Apart from guaranteeing the independence of Cuba, the treaty also forced Spain to hand over Guam and Puerto Rico from Spain's control to the control to the United States.

The death of Archduke Franz Ferdinand collapsed the peace in Europe because Austria- Hungary started a war with Serbia because a Serbian student- Gavrilo Princip shot him dead. After this incidence, European countries built alliances and this lead all of Europe wading into the war.
