3(7 – 2y) = 9

Please help. You have to solve it using distributive property. Thank you.
Alja [10]

Answer:

3(7-2y)=9

Because there is no symbol between the 3 and the "(" we can tell that it wants you to multiply.

With the distributive property you must distribute the 3 within (7-2y)

To that you would multiply 7 by 3, and multiply -2y by 3. This would get you:

21-6y=9

To get y you must isolate it, the first step to isolate it is remove the number with no "y" next to it. Which is "21" Also for further problems your way, You should add/subtract/divide/multiple the number that does not have the same or even a variable as the variable you are trying to find to the other side.

In this case it would be subtracting 21 from the left side and subtracting it to the right side which would give us: 6y=-12

(Because there was already a number with no variable: "9" you will subtract 21 from 9 which is why you get -12).

Next you will further isolate the y by removing the -6. "-6y" means -6 multiplied by y. So you will divide -6 from the left side AND the right side.

-6y ÷ -6 = y ; -12 ÷ -6 = 2

y=2

More tips: When you are moving something to the other side always do the opposite to remove it from one side and move it to the other. Example: -12 + y = 5

You want to move the -12 to the right side. So you need to remove "-12" from the left side by ADDING 12 because -12 + 12 = 0.

Now you simply add it to the right.

Another example: 4y = 8

Because 4y is multiplication (4 times y) you must divide it from each side to isolate the y! : y=2

If you divide a number from the left side, you must also divide it from the right side. If you add a number on the left side, you must also add it on the right side. Same goes for subtraction and multiplication. Think like that!

So ya
