A stomate consists of two kidney-shaped stomal cells (guard cell) that delimit the stoma or ostiole orifice. The latter opens more or less, depending on the needs, depending on the turgor of the stomatal cells.

When the guard cells are turgid, the thinner and more flexible outer wall expands more than the thicker and stiffer inner wall. The cells curl and the ostiole opens.
