Answer:

Dead Phrases: The set of words or phrases which have little or no meaning at all are called dead phrases.

Example 1:

<em>As a matter of fact,</em> all except one member agreed with my suggestions.

<em>"As a matter of fact"</em> is dead phrases, as you could have concisely conveyed the same message by saying "All except one member agreed with my suggestions."

Example 2:

He achieved success only by <em>means of</em> hard work.

"means of" is dead phrase in this sentence - you could have concisely conveyed the same message by saying, "He achieved success only by hard work."

Some other common examples of dead phrases may be;

as far as I'm concerned, by virtue of the fact that, in a very real sense, as a matter of fact.

Explanation:

There are no dead phrases in absolute sense. They are relative to the context i.e in one context they may be dead phrases, while in some other context they may be required. The dead phrases in above examples are dead only when taken with that context.

Read the following paragraph from "Forbidden Fruit."
Leto [7]

Answer:

Regret.

Explanation:

The Russian short story "Forbidden Fruit" by Fazil Iskander tells the story of the young narrator fell upon the <em>"forbidden fruit"</em>, which in his case, is eating pork. Though commanded by his religious dictates, the narrator finds himself in conflict with his knowledge of his sister's consumption of pork and the need to stay loyal to his religious belief, the need to gain favor from his parents.

In the given passage from the story, the narrator seems to regret his past action of betraying and revealing his sister's secret of <em>"eating pork at Uncle Shura's house"</em>. No matter the treachery, he accepts that nothing can justify it the way he had done. And now that he's also taken to eating <em>"pork like everyone else"</em>, it seems to convey no happiness in him, just regret at the insensitive and wrong way of dealing things.

Expansion of idea, all that glitters is not gold(or any one)
nevsk [136]

Answer:

Explanation:

The idea “all that glitters is not gold” was made common by William Shakespeare. <u>The expression comes from the idea that gold is one of the most valuable materials in the world, and that we can recognize it by its shine. </u>Yet, we have to be careful as not everything that glitters and shines will be made of gold. Therefore, the saying tries to warn us that<u> not everything that looks good will turn out to be precious at the end </u>and that we can easily be tricked into thinking something is worth more than it actually is. <u>The first sight of something will not determine its full value.</u>
