The overall purpose of Queen Elizabeth's Address to the Troops at Tilbury is to inform the troops of their obligations.

Queen Elizabeth I of England delivered the Speech to the Troops at Tilbury  on 9 August Old Style (19 August New Style) 1588 to the land forces earlier assembled at Tilbury in Essex in preparation for repelling the expected invasion by the Spanish Armada. Elizabeth I was Queen of England and Ireland from 17 November 1558 until her death on 24 March 1603.
