The proper order is:

1.  Asoka struggles with brothers for throne, then kills brothers and wins throne.

2. Asoka holds power, then attacks Kalinga to extend kingdom.

3.  Asoka regrets bloodshed in Kalinga.

4. Asoka converts to Buddhism due to suffering in Kalinga.

5. Asoka creates pillars to tell subjects of three morals laws and makes kingdom a better place to live.

To conquer the throne, Asoka killed his 99 brothers. But after that, Asoka converted to  Buddhism because he regretted of all bloodshed during attacks in Kalinga, one of his combats. And also, as a Buddhist emperor, he believed that Buddhism is beneficial for all human beings, so he built a number of laws to make kindgdom a better place to live.
