The invasion of Panama by U.S. troops occured in December 1989 and was mainly due to the fact that de facto leader manuel Noriega had criminal charges in America for drug trafficking. This decision to overthrow Noriega was because the U.S. feared for their 35,000 citizens living in the country, and tensions were running high between the two countries (and the fact that a Marine was killed a couple of days prior to the invasion)

This was also done to protect the integrity of the Torrijos-Carter treaty signed ten years prior as they feel it threatened the neutrality of the Panama Canal and the U.S. had the right to intervene military to protect the Canal.
