Their lands were confiscated and they were subjugated and imprisoned in reservations where their condition was miserable and desperate. The movement found its origin in Paute Indian named Wovoka, who announced that he was the messiah coming to earth to prepare the Indians for their salvation. He announced the people to dance for days along with some rituals which he claimed to bring the renewal of native society and decline in the influence of whites.
