Number of cartons of pencils bought by the school = 50

So,

Price of each pencil = $2

So,

\text{Total cost}=\$2\ \times\ \text{Number of pencils}\\\\=\$2\ \times\ 1200\\\\=\$ 2400

Therefore, the school spent $2400 on pencils.
