One expression that Gary can use,where y is the amount of food eaten in a year and x the amount of food eaten in a weeks is:
y=x*52

but we actually know that the cats eat one third of 3 1/2 pounds, that is:

3\frac{1}{2} * \frac{11}{2} = \frac{7*1}{2*2}= \frac{7}{4}

So we can substitute this:
y=\frac{7}{4}*52

which is y=7*13=91

So we actually know that the cats eat 91 pounds of food a year!

logan recieved a raise of $5 per hour. He made $12 per hour before the raise. By what percent did his salary increase? Round to
Nikitich [7]

This is pretty basic, but you need to convert the percentage into a real number that you can use to multiply by the employee’s current pay rate. To do this, simply move the decimal two places to the left. For a 3% increase, you will use .03.

Step 2: Multiply the employee’s current pay rate by that decimal

If your employee makes $15/hour, then you have: 15x.03=.45. So your employee’s increase is 45 cents per hour. For an employee who makes a salary of $45,000/year, then you have: 45,000x.03=1,350. So your salaried employee’s pay increase is $1,350 per year.

Why You Have to Convert the Percent

This is just a little theory and not needed to do the problem.

The percent symbol is used to tell you something about the number it sits beside. Percent means ‘parts per hundred’. So if a % sign sits beside a 3, it really means 3 parts per 100. You don’t need to know this to calculate a pay increase but it might help you to understand why you need to convert the percent into decimal form to begin with. 3% tells us we need to multiply our pay rate by 3 pieces of a hundred.

Do you remember what the decimal places mean? The first decimal place is the tenths place and the second is the hundredths place. This is why when we convert our percent we have to move two places – we have to open up the hundredths place.

Compare and Contrast a square and an equilateral triangle? Be sure to communicate and discuss using mathematical language, ideas
ella [17]

The <u>comparison</u> and <u>contrast</u> between a square and an <em>equilateral triangle</em> are stated and explained below:

What is a <u>square</u>? A <u>square</u> is a <em>plane shape</em> with an equal length of sides. This implies that the <em>measure</em> of its length is the same as that of its <u>breadth</u>.

What is an equilateral triangle? A <em>triangle</em> is a <em>plane shape</em> with<u> three </u>sides, and a <em>sum </em>of its <u>internal</u> angles to equal 180^{o}. Thus an <em>equilateral triangle </em>is a type of triangle with <em>equal lengths of sides</em>, and therefore equal internal angles.

<u>Comparison</u>: i. The two shapes have <em>equal lengths</em> of sides.

ii. An equilateral triangle and a square are examples of <u>plane shapes</u>.

<u>Contrast</u>: i. An equilateral triangle has<em> three sides</em>, while a square has <em>four sides</em>.

ii. An equilateral triangle has <em>three internal angles</em>, while a square has <em>four internal angles</em> which are right angles.

iii. The sum of <u>internal </u>angles of an equilateral triangle is 180^{o}, while that of a square is 360^{o}.
