Read the following excerpt from Levitt and Dubner’s Freakonomics. There is a tale, “The Ring of Gyges,” that Feldman sometimes t

ells his economist friends. It comes from Plato’s Republic. A student named Glaucon offered the story in response to a lesson by Socrates—who, like Adam Smith, argued that people are generally good even without enforcement. Glaucon, like Feldman’s economist friends, disagreed. He told of a shepherd named Gyges who stumbled upon a secret cavern with a corpse inside that wore a ring. When Gyges put on the ring, he found that it made him invisible. With no one able to monitor his behavior, Gyges proceeded to do woeful things—seduce the queen, murder the king, and so on. Glaucon’s story posed a moral question: could any man resist the temptation of evil if he knew his acts could not be witnessed? Glaucon seemed to think the answer was no. The excerpt serves as which of the following in relation to the authors’ argument?
A. a claim that most people are moral
B. an example of morality in the workplace
C. a conclusion about morality in the workplace
D. a counterclaim to the idea that most people are moral

Answer: D. a counterclaim to the idea that most people are moral.

Explanation: a counterclaim is a claim made to rebut an idea, in this case that idea is that most people are moral, according to the excerpt this idea was in a lesson by Socrates. The counterclaim was made by a student named Glaucon who, by telling a story from Plato's Republic, expressed his argument about how the humans couldn't resist the temptation of evil if they knew no one would see them.

The correct answer is D. A counterclaim to the idea that most people are moral

Explanation:

A counterclaim refers to an argument or statement that serves to rebut or prove as invalid the main argument made by someone else. This usually implies the counterclaim provides some evidence to demonstrate the main argument or idea of another person is not true and show the one's claim is valid. In the case of the excerpt presented the main argument the author presents is that people are moral and do not need any enforcement to act correctly, which is supported by the author using "The Ring of Gyges" as an example. On the opposite, a student states people is evil if there was no one witnessing their actions and explains this claim with another story. This means the second argument aimed at disproving the idea of most people being moral and showing this statement was not true. Therefore, the second argument serves as a counterclaim of the author's argument because it rebuts it or disproves it.

Based on this excerpt from Susan Glaspell's Trifles, what can you conclude about Mr. Wright's character?
Nata [24]

Answer:

Based on this excerpt from Susan Glaspell's Trifles, the following can be concluded about Mr. Wright's character:

✔️Mr. Wright preferred to stay alone and isolated.

✔️Mr. Wright did not care about his wife's opinion.

✔️Mr. Wright did not like gossiping about other's lives.

Explanation:

From the excerpt, we discover that Mr. Wright wanted "peace and quiet" and he "talked himself". This means that he wanted to stay alone from talks and as a result, he talked only to himself.

Also, the excerpt reveals that what his wife wanted didn't make much difference to Wright. It then means that he didn't care about his wife's opinion.

Mr. Wright also reported that the folks talked too much and in talking too much, they should have gossiped and he didn't want to be part of that. So, he preferred staying alone and isolated.

Read the excerpt from act 3, scene 2, of Julius Caesar.
Rom4ik [11]

The following is the best summary of this passage: "Brutus asks if he has offended anyone, and they say no. He then asserts that he has not done anything to Caesar that the people would not do to him, and that Caesar’s triumphs have not been downplayed, nor have his crimes been exaggerated. As Antony enters with Caesar’s body, Brutus says that Antony had no part in killing Caesar, but will benefit from his death, just as all the people will. Finally, he says that he killed his best friend for the good of Rome, and he expects the people to do the same to him if Rome will benefit."

What makes it a good summary is that it brings out the main ideas of the text and restates them shortly and cleary:

  • Brutus has indeed not gone against the will of the people by murdering Caesar: "none have I offended;"
  • Brutus acknowledges the fact that he removed a ruler for the people and that he expects the same people to remove him as well if they deem it beneficial: "I have done no more to Caesar than you shall do to Brutus" and "I have the same dagger for myself, when it shall please my country to need my death;"
  • Brutus wants to be fair by alluding to both Caesar's exploits and his failures: "his glory not extenuated, ... nor his offences enforced;"
  • he also said that Antony was not guilty of Caesar's murder but that it is still advantageous for him: "though he had no hand in his death, shall receive the benefit of his dying;"
  • finally, Brutus believes that his deed was a sacrifice in the interest of Rome: "I slew my best lover for the good of Rome."
