The answer to the first question is

2,500 miles

As you can see in the map scale you can roughly calculate how far are the western end of the mali empire and the far eastern of the Songhai Empire.

The answer to the second question is:

Fez and Taghaza; Taghaza and Timbuktu

As you can see on the map Taghaza is exactly in the middle of the way betwwen Fez and Timbuktu.
