When India was partitioned along the religious lines, it was not the case that all the Hindu and Muslim populations lived in different places; the population was mixed, and the partition was met with a lot of unrest and violence in both countries, when the Hindus from Pakistan tried to cross to India and the Muslims from India tried to cross to Pakistan.

They became more of a fashionable item. most likely got more expensive so you'd only see the rich wearing shoes and it would show the social classes more easily so it might have made some people feel bad about themselfs. before they were only used to keep your feet from being burned from a hot ground or from getting frost bite in winter.
