In order for cells to produce the MOST energy, oxygen gas should be present.

<u>Explanation:</u>

Respiration is the process by which a living organism breaks down its food by means of enzymatic process to get the energy out of it. Respiration are of mainly two types – aerobic respiration and anaerobic respiration. The aerobic respiration is the process that utilizes the oxygen gas to fully oxidize the food into corresponding carbon dioxide and water.

This process releases most energy – about 38 ATP molecule per glucose. Anaerobic respiration is very inefficient in producing energy. This process produces 2 to 4 ATP per glucose molecule.
