Let J and K be the times of Jeff and Kirk respectively
To know the time it takes two people to perform a task together use the equation:
\frac{1}{J}+ \frac{1}{K}= \frac{1}{10}
We also know from the problem that J=K-1, so
\frac{1}{K-1}+ \frac{1}{K}= \frac{1}{10}

Now get common denominators
\frac{K}{K(K-1)}+ \frac{K-1}{K(K-1)}= \frac{1}{10}
\frac{K+K-1}{K(K-1)}= \frac{1}{10}
Take reciprocals
\frac{K(K-1)}{2K-1}=10
K(K-1)=10(2K-1)
K^{2} -K=20K-10
K^{2} -21K+10=0
By the quadratic equation:
K=20.512
J=K-1=19.512
Putting these into the original formula for two people working together on a task
\frac{1}{20.512}+ \frac{1}{19.512}= \frac{1}{10}
So it checks out.

How do I simplify this radical?
Yuliya22 [10]
Separate the root expression into the two numbers you found as factors, with each number now under its own square root symbol. For example, sqrt(12) = sqrt(4) times sqrt(3). 3) Keep simplifying. The square root of a perfect square becomes just a number, without theradical<span> square root symbol.</span>

Let me know if you can answer these :)
Olegator [25]

Answer:

10. 285

11. 6\frac{3}{4}

16.a. Stiles Family

<u>Reason</u>-The Styles family uses  twice as much as the other two, because the electric consumption per person (which is =745 KWh) is much higher than the other two.

16.b. Mendelez family

Reason-The Mendelez family uses the least amount of water, because the water usage  per person (which is =875 gallons) is much lower than the other two.

Step-by-step explanation:

10. In 6 mins, no. of machine parts produced = 114

in 1 min, no. of machine parts produced = 114/6

in 15 min, no. of machine parts produces  \frac{114 *15}{6}\\=285

11. To make 8 jumbo muffins take, amount of baking powder used = 1\frac{1}{2} =\frac{3}{2}

To make 1 jumbo muffin, amount of baking powder used = \frac{3}{2} / 8 =3/16

To make 3 dozens = (3 * 12 )= 36 muffins, amount of baking powder used =  36 *3/16

=\frac{27}{4} =6\frac{3}{4}

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

16. a. Electricity consumed by 1 person in the Mendelez family :

=1560/4

=390 KWh

Electricity consumed by 1 person in the Barton family:

=2130/6

=355 KWh

Electricity consumed by 1 person in the Styles Family:

=1490/2

=745 KWh

The Styles family uses  twice as much as the other two, because the electric consumption by 1 person is much higher than the other two.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

16.b. Water consumed by 1 person in the  Mendelez family = 3500/4=875 gallons

Water consumed by 1 person in the Barton family = 6400/6=1050 gallons

Water consumed by 1 person in the Styles family =2500/2=1250 gallons
