The plan failed because the Marines killed several of Brown’s men and captured him. He was put on trial for treason, murder and slave insurrection and sentenced to death.

The raid also had another consequence, it boosted the secession movement because it showed the sectionalism between pro-slavery and anti-slavery regions which eventually led to the Civil War.
