The name Quasi war was given to this conflict because it was an undeclared war between the navy of France and the navy of the United States.

The war began after John Adams rejects still paying the debt United States had with France of supporting them in the Revolutionary War. Adams claimed that the debt was with the French monarchy which was abolished in 1792. The war took place between 1798 and 1800.

The whole war was fought on the sea. Finally, after two years of battles, Adams offered peace to the French government and send a group of people to France to negotiate and sign the Convention of 1800 in which the war ended.
