Determine whether each of the following arguments is a deductive argument or an inductive argument. If the argument is a deducti

ve argument, then evaluate the argument for its validity and soundness. If the argument is an inductive argument, then evaluate the argument for its strength and cogency.
1. A sample of two grains of sand from the beach revealed that both grains of sand were actually tiny diamonds. Therefore, it must be the case that the entire beach is made up of valuable diamond particles.
2. Since Thanksgiving is always on a Monday, it follows that the day after Thanksgiving is always a Wednesday.
3. If you double the length of the sides of a square, then you will also double the square's area. So, if you double the length of the sides of a square with an area of 25 square centimeters, then the resulting square will have an area of 50 square centimeters.

Answer:

1. Inductive argument.

2. Inductive argument.

3. Deductve argument.

Explanation:

1. This argument is inductive. The conclusion is a generalization, that is drawn by a premise, the premise has been obtained out of experimentation.

If two grains of sand have diamons, it doesn´t mean the entire beach is made of them. This argument is not strong because the conclusion is not accurate.

2. This is a deductive argument. This type of argument depends on the logic struture of it. If the premise were to be true, the conclusion would be true also.

It is not a sound argument, because thanksgiving happends every fourth thursday of november. It is an invalid argument because the premise is false, there for the concusion is false.

3. This is an invalid deductive argument. The premise is incorrect, so the conclusion that is being deduce from it is also wrong. It is not a sound argument because if you double the length of the sides of a square, the area would quatriple.

BARSIC [14]

Answer:

Instead, Ben ended up as an apprentice to his half-brother James, who was a printer. Ben loved to read and write poetry, so this job seemed as good as any. At the age of twelve he signed an indenture lasting nine years. While learning the trade from James, Ben worked on his writing, copying the style of essays he read in a copy of a magazine.

When James started a paper in 1721, called the New England Courant, Ben submitted a series of essays to the magazine under the pseudonym Silence Dogood. The essays made fun of Boston society and became very popular.
