The news is out! Lee Forest announced Tuesday that Seattle native Leila Croft will be the new chief of production at Forest Home

Appliance beginning March 1. What do you think the article is about? What do you learn from the first sentence? Read the lead sentences of the following online magazine article. Two witnesses have identified a Trenton man in connection with a Grand Forks robbery. Police Chief Charlie Knotts refused to comment about the situation. What is this article about?

The first article is about the promotion of a lady from Seattle to an important position at a private company. The fact that the article begins by the sentence “the news is out!” implies up front that it is an important event for its readers and that apparently this lady is an influential and respected member of the community and that this promotion is beneficial for it and for the lady herself.

The second article is obviously a news report on a police investigation. It starts with the mention of “two witnesses”, implying that they were witnesses to a crime, which is confirmed immediately after the opening line. The crime itself has a name (Grand Forks robbery) which demonstrates that the crime was a serious and had dramatic repercussions for the community where it occurred. Even the police official who is interviewed by the press holds an important rank which further underscores the gravity of the offense.

Identify the point of view in this paragraph: The dew on the grass made
Artemon [7]

I've looked this question up online. The options are simply:

a. First Person

b. Second Person

c. Third Person

Answer:

The point of view in this paragraph is:

a. First person.

Explanation:

The narrator of the excerpt is telling the story from a first-person point of view. The easiest way to confirm that is by taking a look at the pronouns used:

The dew on the grass made my running shoes damp. It didn't bother me. The sound of my feet hitting the street formed a rhythm, a steady pattern of light thumps. I timed my breathing with the rhythm.

First-person narrators use first-person pronouns such as "I" and "me". This type of narrator gives us his/her own perspective on things. That means we accompany this narrator throughout the story, see things from his perspective, and only get to know what he knows. One advantage of first-person point of view is that we get to dive deeper into the narrator's feelings and thoughts. One disadvantage is that he is a biased narrator, which makes him untrustworthy.

"George Washington Carver was an artist long before he became a scientist" explains how
RUDIKE [14]

Answer:

The first sentence is written in the passive voice, with a passive verb. George is the subject, so what is being done to him is the passive verb. The less passive form of the sentence would be similar to "Mrs. Millholland gave George Washington Carver piano lessons." This is the active verb, since it is being done/has been done by a person rather than a subject being acted on.
