Amphibians Amphibians are cold-blooded vertebrates. Frogs, toads, and salamanders are the three major kinds of amphibians. The name "amphibian" comes from the Greek word "amphibios," which means "double life." The name is fitting because amphibians spend half of their lives in water and half on land. Amphibians are born in the water. Their eggs need to be in the water to keep from drying out. Most amphibians breathe with gills when they are young. Then they undergo a metamorphosis and develop lungs. Amphibians absorb air and water through their skin. They need moisture in order to survive. In dry weather, amphibians will burrow underground to find moist soil.
