The scopes trial was a trial that dealt with the conflict between creationism and evolution. The state funded schools didn't want to teach people evolution and were heavily influenced by the church. On the other hand, many teachers and lecturers wanted to teach evolution as an empirically tested scientific process. This trial originated when a teacher named John Scopes who taught evolution was arrested and stood trial for this.
