     What helps us understand tone is the question   4. What is the effect of the author's choice of words?

   By <u>effect</u> we might mean the emotions we get from these words, the mood implied in the situation expressed by the words the author chose. The style of writing designs the atmosphere the text has and tells us the way we should understand it  in some way.
