Most of the fungi are saprophytic in nature which means they grow on decaying, and dead organic matter such as tree leaves, fallen trees, dead animals, and they get nutrition by digesting these organic matters. By the process of decomposing organic matter, they recycle the nutrients and help to clean the pollution from the environment.

Fungi do not contain a stomach, so they can secrete enzymes like cellulase, xylanase, α- amylase, etc from their hyphae fungus (help in digesting complex organic molecules into a simple form) which can easily be absorbed by these fungi.
