4y + x = -17

4y = -x - 17

-2y + 2x = 16

      -2x   -2x

-2y = -2x + 16

y = 1x - 8

Solve for x.

-1/4x - 17/4 = 1x - 8

+1/4x           +1/4x  

-17/4 = 5/4x - 8

+8                +8

15/4 = 5/4x

Check:

-1/4(3) - 17/4 = 1(3) - 8
