But promise me not to laugh too much. And do not expect a comedy. It is a drama." How does the author use tone to set the time and place of his story? How would the tone be different if writing about similar events today? Then pick one sentence and rewrite it as if you were writing about a terrifying or humiliating night to your friend. The author uses a dramatic and dated tone to set the time and place of his story as he uses dated vocabulary to convey what he is saying. Tone would be different when writing about similar events today as we'd use more modern vocabulary, which would cause the reader, or listener, to understand more thoroughly of events that we are speaking about.
