Abraham Lincoln's Inauguration
March 4, 1861
Monday, March 4, 1861, was a big day for Abraham Lincoln and for America. That morning, he and outgoing President James Buchanan left the Willard Hotel, which is nearby the White House, in a horse-drawn carriage bound for the Capitol. Shortly after 1 p.m., Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Roger B. Taney administered the presidential oath of office. With the swearing of his official vows, Lincoln became the 16th president of the United States. His speech was a very important one because he would be speaking not only as the new president but also as the leader of a nation in crisis. Lincoln was well prepared. He had sought lots of help to deliver the right message in his inaugural address.

how did the Americans disagree over the role of the federal and state governments before and after the during the civil war?
romanna [79]
From what I can remember, states' rights was a large factor contributing to the Civil War. With Lincoln becoming president and representing the North, the Southern states seceded, leading to a war. The state governments of the South argued that since the Constitution and federal government was created by the states, the federal government had no right to stop states from seceding. President Lincoln and other northerners disagreed and wanted to preserve the Union by stopping states from seceding.
After the war, I believe the South still disagreed on a strong federal government. They wanted to rule the area by themselves.

describe charles darwin’s theory of evolution in your own words. how does it differ from herbert spencer’s idea of social darwin
vaieri [72.5K]

The major difference between Charles Darwin and Herbert Spencer's theory of evolution was based on misapplying Darwin's biological evolutionary concept by political, economical and social-based concepts.

Explanation:

Charles Darwin was an important person in history who wrote: " On the Origin of Species". In this work, he summed up both history and science. He explained that human evolution is base on natural selection ( Organisms evolve as new species by spontaneous mutations such as reproductions, having offspring, battling for foods with other organisms and avoid being killed.)

Social Darwinists used Darwin's idea and made their own ideologies. That the biological world got evolved socially and economically. Herbert Spencer one of the Social Darwinism follower coined the term " survival of the fittest". He expressed that the world only contains two divisions: rich and poor.

The rich were naturally fittest to survive and the poor was weak and unfit. Also, they believed that it was an error if the poor allowed to continue breeding.
