    Protozoan infection mainly affects the upper portion  of the small intestine. Most infections are asymptomatic and occur  in both adults and children. This condition may be chronic in nature, characterized by softened  with fat aspect, accompanied by fatigue, anorexia, flatulence and  abdominal distension. Anorexia, associated with malabsorption, can lead to weight loss and anemia.

   The transmission can be due fecal-oral. Direct, by contamination of the hands and consequent ingestion  of existing cysts in infected person waste; or indirectly through  ingestion of contaminated water or food.
