A food chain is a linear series of distribution of energy in the form of food. This energy is distributed among the organisms from lower to higher trophi levels.
A food web is a network of food chains. In a food web organisms can feed other organisms of one or more trophic levels.
All living beings need energy to stay alive. Energy is required in all physical activities. Animals and all other living beings get energy from the food they eat. Although animals do not produce their food, plants do. Plants do this with a process called photosynthesis. In photosynthesis sunlight, water and nutrients are necessary to get energy.
A food chain tells how living beings get food and also how the nutrients and energy are passed from one organism to another. The chain begins with plants and ends with animals. Plants are at the bottom because they do photosynthesis, hence they are called Autotroph while the animals above the plants in the food chain are called Hetrotrop, because they do not do photosynthesis and they depend on other plants and organisms for their food.;
