Excessive growth of algae in the water bodies due to presence of nitrogen or   phosphorus from the nearby is called algae blooms. The overgrowth of algae blocks sunlight for submerged plants. Algae bloom may also release toxins in the ponds, lakes. On the death of algae, water dissolved oxygen gets depleted in their decomposition. Due to lack of oxygen other aquatic life unable to survive.
