Just to get formulas out the way so that I don't have to write them out every time:

slope-intercept form: y = mx + b
where m is the slope and b is the y-intercept.

slope = \frac{Y2-Y1}{X2-X1}
where X1 and Y1 are the x- and y-coordinates in the first ordered pair. Same applies for X2 and Y2.

1) They give you the slope so plug it in along with the point given and solve for b.

y = 2/5x + b
- 6 = 2/5(- 1) + b
- 6 = - 2/5 + b
- 6 + 2/5 = b
- 30/5 + 2/5 = b
- 28/5 = b

Your equation: y = - 2/5x - 28/5

2) Find your slope first then plug in any point to solve for b.
m = \frac{8 - 5}{5 - (- 2)} =  \frac{3}{7}

y = 3/7x + b
5 = 3/7(- 2) + b
5 = - 6/7 + b
5 + 6/7 = b
35/7 + 6/7 = b
41/7 = b

y = 3/7x + 41/7

3) Same thing as above.
m = \frac{7 - 7}{5 - (- 3)} =  \frac{0}{8} = 0

y = 0x + b
y = b
7 = b

y = 7

4) Same as above
m = \frac{- 5- 1}{6-6} =  \frac{- 6}{0} = undefined.

Because your slope is undefined, it is no longer a "y =" problem but rather an "x =" equation. You then take the x-values of the two ordered pairs (they should match) and that becomes the right side of the equal sign.

x = 6

Working together to palms can drain a certain pool in three hours if it takes the older pump nine hours to drain the pool by its
andreyandreev [35.5K]

Answer:

It would take the newer pump 4.5 hours to drain the pool

Step-by-step explanation:

Let's investigate first what is the fraction of the job done in the unit of time (hour in this case) by each pump if the work individually:

older pump: if it takes it 9 hours to complete the job, it does \frac{1}{9} of the job in one hour.

newer pump: we don't know how long it takes (this is our unknown) so we call it "x hours". Therefore, in the unit of time (in one hour) it would have completed \frac{1}{x} of the total job.

both pumps together: since it takes both 3 hours to complete the job, in one hour they do \frac{1}{3} of the job.

Now, we can write the following equation about fractions of the job done:

<em>The fraction of the job done by the older pump plus the fraction of the job done by the newer pump in one hour should total the fraction of the job done when they work together.</em> That is in mathematical terms:

\frac{1}{9} +\frac{1}{x} =\frac{1}{3}

and solving for x:

\frac{1}{9} +\frac{1}{x} =\frac{1}{3} \\x+9=3x\\2x=9\\x=\frac{9}{2} \,\,hours\\x = 4.5\,\,hours

Which of the following is an example of a proper fraction?
nirvana33 [79]
The numbers should be less than the denominator, therefore i think it's 5/9 , because the rest have a numerator greater than the denominator, even the 3 . it's written as 3/1 and 3 >1.
