Democrats usually link the origin of the party as having been inspired by the "Democratic-Republican Party" founded by Thomas Jefferson with anti monarchical views. The cohesion of the party was put to test over the slavery issue, as southern democrats wanted to extend it to all territories while northern Democrats thought it should be a more restricted issue.
