Answer:

In absence of carbonic anhydrase enzyme, transport of CO2 gas through blood plasma in form of bicarbonate ion would not occur. The person would also suffer from acidosis.

Explanation:

Carbonic anhydrase catalyzes the reversible reaction of water with CO2 and leads to the formation of carbonic acid which in turn dissociates into hydrogen and bicarbonate ions.

The enzyme present in RBCs maintains the diffusion gradient for the movement of CO2 into and out of the RBCs. Movement of bicarbonate ion out of RBCs is followed by the movement of chloride ions into RBCs.

In capillaries present around the alveoli, CO2 is diffused out of the plasma and enters the alveoli while the reaction sequence is revered at tissues and CO2 enters the RBCs.

Therefore, if carbonic anhydrase is absent or nonfunctional, the diffusion gradient for CO2 would not be formed. It would prevent the transport of CO2 gas in blood plasma from tissues to the lungs. The protons released in the reaction also serve as a buffer to maintain the pH of extracellular fluid.

At kidneys, reduced secretion of H+ into the urine and reduced reabsorption of Na+ and HCO3 − into the blood would cause acidosis.

The person would die because carbonic anhydrase is a form family of enzymes that catalyze that rapid interconversion of carbon dioxide and water to bicarbonate and protons

A man who is an achondroplastic dwarf with normal vision marries a color-blind woman of normal height. The man's father was six
Degger [83]

Answer:

1/4.

Explanation:

The autosomal dominant trait means that the trait is visible in homozygous dominant and in heterozygous condition. The X linked recessive trait will be pass down from mothers to their sons and daughters will show the trait in homozygous recessive condition only.

The man is achandroplastic dwarf ( Aa) with normal vision (XY ) is married with woman that has normal height (aa) with color blind (XhXh). They have a daughter who is dwarf ( Aa). The probability of being dwarf can be calculated by the cross Aa × aa. The offspring are Aa, Aa, aa, aa. Means 1/2 are the probability of being hetterozygous for achondroplastic . The vision probability is calculated by cross XY and XhXHh. The probability that female is heterozygous is 1/2.

So, the heterozygous probability for both trait is 1/2× 1/2 = 1/4.

6. A scientist measures the circumference of acorns in a population of oak trees
melisa1 [442]

Answer:

6. 2 cm

8. Greater than 2 cm and less than 2 cm

Explanation:

Complete Question

6. A scientist measures the circumference of acorns in a population of oak trees and discovers that the most common circumference is 2 cm. What would you expect the most common circumference(s) to be after 10 generations of stabilizing selection?

-2 cm

-Greater than 2 cm or less than 2 cm

-Greater than 2 cm and less than 2 cm

-Can't tell from the information given

8. Refer to question 6, but this time answer what you would expect after 10

generations of directional selection.

-2 cm

-Greater than 2 cm or less than 2 cm

-Greater than 2 cm and less than 2 cm

-Can't tell from the information given

Solution -

6. In an stabilizing selection, the average trait of a given population is favored over extreme values. Hence, it can be said that one specific trait is over presented in a given population. For example – uniform human birth weight, number of eggs a bird lay etc.

Here in this case if most common circumference is 2 cm , then the tree population will try to have this trait as a stabilizing trait.

Thus, option A is correct

8. In a  directional selection, the genetic variation decreases as per the environmental change. And hence the average trait will not be selected. Instead traits either higher or lower the average values will be preferred.

Thus, option C is correct
