In Shakespeare's <em>the Tempest</em>, the story is centered around Prospero, a magician that was banished from his dukedom and ended up on an enchanted island. Caliban, a creature that tried to take the innocence of Prospero's daughter, was imprisoned. Prospero taught him language, but Caliban remained defiant. He curses all the time and ignores Prospero's orders. Prospero calls him <em>"thou most lying slave" </em>and <em>"thing of darkness"</em>. It is due to both Caliban's behavior and physical appearance that people consider him a monster.

On the other hand, Ariel is Prospero's agent who is always at his disposal. He is obedient, and carries out all the tasks without a word of complaint. Prospero rescued him from a pine tree, where the witch Sycorax imprisoned him.  Prospero refers to Ariel as <em>"tricksy spirit"</em> and<em> "my diligence"</em><em>,</em> which suggests he is quite fond of him. This is also true for the king's men, who treat him with respect.
