Answer:

67.2 gallons

Step-by-step explanation:

Given: A water tank is \frac{1}{8} full. the tank is \frac{3}{4} full when 42 gallons of water are added to the tank.

To Find: how much water can the tank hold.

Solution:

let total capacity of tank be =\text{t}

initially water in tank    =\frac{1}{8}\text{t}

amount of water added in tank =42 \text{gallons}

water in tank after more water is added =\frac{3}{4}\text{t}

now,

water added in tank =(\text{water in tank after more water is added})-(\text{initial amount of water})

                                  \frac{3}{4}\text{t}-\frac{1}{8}\text{t}

                                  \frac{6}{8}-\frac{1}{8}

                                  \frac{5}{8}\text{t}

water added in tank =42 \text{gallons}

              \frac{5}{8}\text{t}=42

              \text{t}=\frac{42\times8}{5}

              \text{t}=67.2 \text{gallons}

tank can hold 67.2 \text{gallons} of water

Let, the water capcity of tank = x

it would be x*3/4 = 42

x = 42*4 / 3 = 168/3 = 56

So, the tank can hold up to 56 gallons
