King Charles I acceded to his request for a colonial grant and ceded lands located north of the Potomac River on each side of the Chesapeake Bay. Calvert died five weeks before the charter for Maryland was officially granted on June 20, 1632. However, Maryland grew a refuge for Catholic settlers, as George Calvert had desired.
