Village life in America and A Confederate Girl’s Diary

Both diaries, Village life in America and A Confederate Girl’s Diary, are very interesting in the way that they are written. Sarah Morgan Dawson and Caroline Cowles Richards both have written about the Civil war, however they have very different perspectives and opinions about it.

Here are some similarities. Both girls were going through a time of war. They both despised the war and wanted it to end as soon as possible. They have both gone through moments of fear and misery, but also happiness and pleasure at sometimes. They have both lost family members and friends that they have loved. Both females were reporting and observing what was happening around them and they were very good writers too. At the end of the war, both Dawson and Richards were very glad the war was over.

There were also a few differences with the two diaries too. The biggest difference is that Richards is on the unions side while Dawson is on the Confederates side. Dawson was devasted at the loss of her side. “Thursday the 13th came the dreadful tidings of the surrender of Lee and his army on the 9th. Everybody cried”. Richards was triumphant at the win of her side. “Lee has surrendered! and all the people seem crazy in consequence. The bells are ringing, boys and girls, men and women are running through the streets wild with excitement”. Finally, Richards seems more like a calm and funny person while Dawson looks for revenge "Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord." This is murder! God have mercy on those who did it!”.

To sum it all up both diaries were very different even though they were written and the same time. Both girls were strong throughout the civil war, though the lost several family members. In the end Richards was very happy that her side won the war while Dawson was devastated at her sides loss.

How does the text structure help the author convey his
Alekssandra [29.7K]

Answer:

Second Option: By contrasting the outcome of Spartan and Roman  conquests, Machiavelli provides evidence to support his  claim that a prince must destroy a free city in order to  hold it

Explanation:

"The Prince" (published 1532) is a political treatise by Italian writer, philosopher, diplomat and political theorist Niccolò Machiavelli (1469 - 1527).

In Chapter five before these lines Machiavelli suggests three ways to control conquered states (or city states). The three methods are;

  1. Ruin them, as Rome destroyed Carthage
  2. Go to live there and rule it personally
  3. Keep the state intact but install an oligarchy

Next he also suggests that the best option is the first one i.e. to ruin such states.

In this passage Machiavelli is trying to give evidence to prove that the first option is the best option. For this purpose he gives example from Roman and Greek history.

First option is incorrect because, although he describes Spartans and Romans' actions, it is for the purpose of supporting his claim.

Third option is incorrect because, Machiavelli has already suggested the solutions of the problem; in these lines he is just trying to prove the effectiveness of his suggested solution.

Fourth option is incorrect because, the passage is not about description, but giving examples from the history to prove his claim.

Write short composition about the travelling to another place...........to your family
Nookie1986 [14]

Answer:

The hot, humid weather that ran through out Orlando, Florida was absolutely unbearable. While I was ecstatic to reunite with my aunt, uncle, and cousins after almost 3 years, I couldn't help but be disappointed by the landscape. I was under the impression that Florida would be paradise, I would feel the cool breeze of the ocean air on my face, the crunchy texture of the sand in between my toes, and taste the salt water on my lips. Yet, i've been here for under an hour and was feeling like I would melt!  After an eternity, my family finally decided to head inside the house. Freed from the sun's sweltering heat, I ran to the refrigerator, opening the door and allowing the chilly air to waft out and cool my sweating body. After a couple minutes of relief, I re-joined my family in the living room. It was great to see everyone, I noticed how different everyone looked. My oldest cousin, Elliot, had grown much taller, towering over both his mother and father. Olivia, the youngest of my cousins, had also grown. Last time I saw her, she was barely two years old. Now, I watched as she ran as fast as her little legs could take her, circling the coffee table, babbling mindlessly as she went.  My aunt called my name, drawing me out of my deep thought.

"We will be heading to a restaurant called La Cantina in an hour for dinner. It is right on the beach! You will love the view. "

My stomach grumbled in response, I hadn't eaten all day! After quickly agreeing, Elliot and I made our way to his bedroom. It had been so long since we last talked, I was excited to get caught up. Before we knew it, an hour had passed and we all made our way to the restaurant. The dinner was wonderful. I was so happy to finally be surrounded by family. Unfortunately, most of the family is spread out over the US, and we rarely get a chance to see each other! After a while, we made our way back to the house, bellies full and cheeks aching from so much laughter. I dreaded the day I would have to head back home.
