so first you would do PEMDAS

step 1: do the parenthesis:: 3+2 is 5 so now the equation is 5-3^2

next you do the exponent, 3^2 which would be 9

now simplify: 5-9

= -4

(3 + 2) - 3² = 5 - 9 = -4
